How to choose an anime tabletop RPG for your group

Choose an anime tabletop RPG by the experience you want: isekai, cards, JRPG adventures or flexible settings. Five starting points and a practical trial.

Gates of Krystalia Editorial TeamPublished 29 September 2026

Start with what you want to do at the table: inhabit another world, fight a JRPG-style boss or create characters across genres. Artwork alone cannot tell you how a session will play.

Three questions before choosing

  1. Write one scene everyone wants to play: arriving in a new world, facing a boss or protecting a place that has become home. Ask which rules support it.
  2. Choose the decisions that interest you: building a character, managing visible resources or exploring a setting. Read a complete example, including the opponent’s response.
  3. Check material languages, preparation and introductory resources. A translated website does not guarantee a translated rulebook.

Try before choosing

Pick two games and give each a short trial. Afterwards, ask everyone to name an interesting decision, an unclear rule and a scene they would like to continue. For an isekai experience with card management, try the GOK demo. For a different approach, explore the official resources linked here.
