A strong isekai opening gives the Heroes an immediate choice. These original narrative prompts can be adapted to Gates of Krystalia. They are not canonical events, complete adventures or new rules.
Prepare the first meeting
Choose a hook, name two people with conflicting interests and prepare three clues the group can find in any order. Leave the solution open. Ask what the Heroes fear losing, then show a consequence of their first decision.
1. The market of names
The Heroes arrive at a market where every trade requires a new name. A craftswoman offers work if they abandon their old story. Accepting opens contacts; refusing brings them closer to the outcasts.
2. The inn on the last bridge
An inn shelters newcomers from the portal. The bridge is failing and there is timber to save only one structure. Saving the bridge preserves trade; saving the inn protects a refuge and its community.
3. The summoned tournament
The prize is a journey home, but the final opponent is another newcomer with the same hope. The Heroes can win, negotiate or investigate the prize. Each choice changes who trusts them.
4. Tomorrow’s map
A map shows a fire that has not happened. Giving it to the authorities saves time but exposes a secret refuge. Hiding it protects the residents and leaves disaster prevention to the group.
5. The celebrated stranger
A statue depicts a Hero who arrived only today. Its keeper asks them to repeat a legendary victory. Upholding the myth brings help; investigating it may shake the town’s trust.
6. The foreign harvest
A seed from the old world grows too fast and threatens local fields. Villagers want it destroyed; a healer wants to study it. The group must choose what to protect before it flowers again.
7. The toll gate
Every reopened passage drains a well. Traders want travel; farmers want closure. Finding another route takes time; favouring either interest leaves a community struggling.
8. The monsters’ language
Only the newcomers understand a supposedly hostile creature. It asks for help rescuing its young beneath the fortress. Translating could prevent a fight; lying preserves a fragile military alliance.
9. The farewell festival
The village prepares a farewell festival, but nobody has checked whether the portal works. Telling the truth allows preparation; keeping hope alive makes possible failure more painful.
10. The forgotten craft
An ordinary skill from the old world can solve a local problem but threatens a monopoly. Teaching it creates allies and rivals; using it secretly solves only the immediate crisis.
11. Two moons, one promise
A messenger brings incompatible requests from two villages before the same eclipse. The Heroes can split up, negotiate or choose. The place left alone will remember their decision.
12. The door left open
Returning home is finally possible, but the passage will remain open to everyone. Joining worlds brings new relationships and dangers. Closing it protects what exists while separating people who chose to meet.
Bring them into Gates of Krystalia
For the market, make acquiring the first equipment a moment of accepting a new life: the Core Rulebook starts Heroes with Normal Clothes and 50 copper coins. For the inn, establish relationships and everyday activities before danger. For the tournament, prepare an encounter using the combat rules and allow different approaches to rivals. None of these hooks automatically grants bonuses, equipment or abilities.
